It’s not about the moneyAt a recent board development workshop with one of our clients, a board member confessed that she was really uneasy about fundraising. “I’m uncomfortable asking for money,” she said. I responded that it’s not about asking for money. It’s about building relationships and inviting people into your organization to share the work you do. “Oh!” she replied. “I can build relationships! I feel better already and excited about how I can reach people through relationship-building.” Wow. She had grasped the essential point about fundraising – it’s about people. Once she understood this, she could see herself participating in fund development – even enthusiastically! How will you ask your board members to contribute to your fundraising efforts?
